Have you ever dreamed of transforming an ordinary space into a dream home on wheels? Join us on our exciting journey!
Now that we have our dream home on wheels, it's time to bring our vision to life. Do we want a bohemian, colorful oasis? An eclectic monochromatic sanctuary? An art deco lounge or a sophisticated space to sprawl? Should it transport us to our favorite vacation spot or a future dream destination?
The possibilities are endless, but one thing is clear: to make it our own, we had to demo what was there. The thought was daunting. How would I know what to do? Which screws should be left alone? What would I find? And would I be ready for this challenge? We decided to put it off for a while, soaking up every second together before he had to go. I knew I would need a distraction from the sting of being apart.
A few months later, once I had adjusted to my new deployment life, and boy what an adjustment it was, it was time to dive in. I knew it would be hard work, but driven by the dream of making our vision come true, I gloved up and thought, how hard could it be?

Surprisingly, it wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined… at first. It wasn't until my 9,395,518th screw, an aching forearm, and blisters on my fingers and palms that I realized the magnitude of the demo. I attacked the bunk room first. The first bunk was out in no time, and the futon shortly after. But the third bunk? That's when the colorful language started. Something I didn't know: RVs don't use standard Phillips head screws. Did you know that? They use pan head screws, which look a bit like Phillips heads but with a small square in the center.
You may be asking, “Why does that matter?” Well… let's just say I had an incredible knack for stripping them. If I stripped one, I stripped half. Most were in precarious positions that required contorting my body. I had NO IDEA how to get a stripped pan head out, and now I had no fewer than 20 to remove. I tried rubber bands, taping, using pliers… you name it, I tried it. It became clear I would need to learn a new skill: using a screw extractor. Not my favorite new skill, but invaluable for keeping to the schedule.
Having put my new skill to the test, I knocked out bunk 3 and moved on to the living room, feeling invincible. BAM! The second futon was out as quick as the first. POW! The banquet was slightly trickier, but nothing I couldn't handle. I was on fire and felt great.

As the day came to a close, I cleaned up and hit the showers, basking in the success of the day. A few hours later, Robbie called for our evening chat. It was so empowering to show him what I had accomplished. We started discussing the layout, mapping out our home with newfound clarity: the desk here, the couch there, a gallery wall on this side, and an “L” shaped banquet; we’ll get a runner for this space, a funky rug for there. A framed TV would look nice above the fireplace, don’t you think? My imagination soared, and Robbie was along for the ride, offering tidbits here and there. The excitement was infectious.
